About the Item

A magnificent, fine and impressive antique American coin silver tray and sterling silver drinking goblets; an addition to our dining silverware collection. This magnificent American silver wine and drinks set consists of ten drinking goblets with a matching tray. The silver goblets each have a plain circular bell-shaped form to a tapering circular pedestal foot. The plain surface of each goblet is embellished with a bright cut engraved crest of a on a wreath a demi-savage wreathed about the temples and waist with laurel, his arms extended and holding in the right hand a dagger, in the left a key, all above the motto 'Furth fortune and fill the fetters'*. The upper rim of each goblet bears an applied moulded border. The silver tray has an oval form; the plain surface of the tray bears the identical engraved heraldic marking as that to the goblet. The rim of the tray is encompassed with an impressive applied gadroon decorated border. Either end of the tray features an impressive cast silver handle ornamented with graduating bead decoration and an enveloping leaf design to the handpiece, in addition to trifurcating scrolling leaf decorated terminals. The tray is supported by four impressive cast silver bracket style feet, ornamented with further bead decoration in addition to a scrolling border and organic motif. The hallmarks to the underside of each piece determine the sterling silver goblets were crafted by S Kirk & Son Co (circa 1900) and the coin silver tray was made by Henderson & Gaines (circa 1860). * This crest and motto pertains to the Highlands Scottish Clan Murray; the chief of this clan holds the title Duke of Atholl. Condition This magnificent antique silver tray and goblet set is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.
