Textured Medium Vase, Cream, White, Brown and Black Lava Glaze and Porcelain
About the Item
This medium heavily textured volcanic bottle shaped vessel with black and white glaze and markings. Made from black textured stoneware clay and porcelain engobe with the addition of lava stone.
Inspiration for the piece comes from the clay itself and the chemical relationships that glaze and volcanic matter create. Travels around the world, particularly Iceland and Japan and their volcanic landscapes. 1960's and 1970's Eastern European pottery with ombre glazing and retro forms are also an influence.
The work is hand built using a combination of stoneware black and buff clays, volcanic slips are added under glaze. Multiple firings of glaze and porcelain create a cracked surface.
Imperfections are a key component of my work and the multiple firings push each piece to it’s limits. I explore and encourage, drips, cracks and blisters evoking raw unfinished fragile textures.
Please be advised that each edition of the piece is produced uniquely by hand, due to the randomness of the mark making the end result may differ from the image shown.
Due to the fragility of the work, to avoid the need to return I send photographs of any commissioned piece for approval before shipping.
When unpacking this item please be aware that the exterior finish is fragile. Please do not 'roll' the item while unpacking.
This piece is not designed to hold water - some seeping may occur.

Alison Lousada
Alison Lousada specialises in creating distinctive and individual stoneware vessels. They investigate the collaboration between the domestic bellied form and the broken fragile painted surface. Using a combination of stoneware course clays and porcelain, pieces are repeat fired resulting in cracked and blistered finishes. The addition of volcanic engobes and lava stone deepen the textured and disrupted veneer which is so integral to her practice. Inspiration & Influences: Travelling, Icelandic landscapes, vintage ceramics, 1970’s German pottery, the material itself, chemical reactions in the kiln, Japanese ceramics, wabi sabi, imperfection, porosity, textures, volcanic rock, rule breaking, domestic vessels, African milk pots, cracked surfaces, bellied forms. Monochromatic and natural tones, areas of pastel, gold lustre highlights Textures: rough and smooth, Matt and shine, raw unglazed clay, sharp edges, scratched and scored. Technique & process: All vessels are hand built and/or wheel thrown. Pieces go through multiple firings, layering glazes and volcanic engobes, the form is the canvas, painted, brushed on, poured on, porcelain applied with a palette knife, shrinkage creates cracking. Volcanic rock melts and blisters in with the glaze.
