Smaller Danish horn-decorated earthenware vase with blue flowers on a light base

About the Item

This smaller earthenware vase by Herman A. Kähler is horn-decorated with blue flowers on a light base. When Herman H. C. Kähler took over the family company in 1917 as the third generation of Kähler leadership, he reintroduced horn painting. This technique has deep roots in pottery history and was used at Kähler's workshop in the early 1800s. The demanding technique required a skilled and experienced painter to apply the colored slip (begitning) to unfinished items. A goose feather was placed at the tip of a hollow cow horn, which was filled with slip, and the amount was controlled by finger pressure. The vase is incised with the ‘HAK’ monogram.
