'Ringo' Vase by Mari Simmulson for Upsala Ekeby, Sweden

About the Item

A brutalist mid-century art vase known as "Ringo", by Mari Simmulson for Upsala Ekeby, Sweden. Simmulson was one of Scandinavias most talented ceramicist, she often experimented with various techniques and variations of glazing, which shows very well in this piece, some smooth parts as the top with green dots and chamotte ceramic on the sides, which makes it very special. Mari Simmulson (1911-2000), was born in St. Petersburg and was an Estonian-Swedish ceramicist, painter and textile artist. After graduating from Tallinn in 1930, Simmulson studied for Professor Jaco at the State School of Art 1931–1935. As a research fellow, she came to Helsinki in 1937, where she worked as a freelance artist at Arabia. She continued her studies in sculpture for Karl Killer 1938–1939 and 1942–1943 at the Academie der bildenden Künste in Munich and 1941–1942 she studied at the Higher School of Art in Tallinn. She came to Sweden as a refugee in 1944 and the following year was employed at Gustavsbergs Studio where she worked until she was linked to Upsala-Ekeby in 1949 until 1972. She was also a designer at Deco in Helsingborg for a few years. Simmulson's ceramic production includes useful ornamental goods and decorative works. Upsala-Ekeby Ltd. was established on 29 January 1886, in Sweden. Upsala began with the production of bricks and tiles. In the 1910s, the company began hiring artists. Among the first was Anna-Lisa Thomson and Sven Erik Skawonius. The company’s ceramic manufacturing began in the 1960s in response to growing sales. The company now hired some of their best-known artists and designers such as Mari Simmulson, Arthur Percy, Olle Alberius, Carl Malmsten, Vicke Lindstrand, and Ingrid Atterberg to name a few. The factories closed in 1980.
