Japanese antique painted pottery / "Eseto" / Edo period, 1800s / Ashtray

About the Item

This is a pottery called Seto-yaki, which was fired in Seto, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Seto is a kiln with a long history in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. (Seto kilns are marked with red circles on the map.) It is said to have originated around the 13th century. This is Seto ware made roughly from the late Edo period to the Meiji period (1800s). It is one of the tobacco tools called "hiire". It was used in tea ceremonies. To use it, put ash inside and bury burning charcoal in the center to use as a spark for smoking. In modern times, I think it would be good to use this as an ashtray or put flowers in it to make a vase. I think this pattern is very nice. There are three small triangles, which represent bamboo shoots. And I draw such a scenery that a small bird is flying over the bamboo shoots. On the other side, a hat that is worn on the head or a basket for storing wild vegetables is represented by a large triangle, and there are lines and X marks in it, which expresses how it is woven. I draw a picture of how the vines have grown on the tools that are no longer used. It expresses a very peaceful landscape where you can see the work of nature and the work of people. There are no major scratches, but there is a chip on the edge of the mouth. Please note that this is a trace that has been used for a long time. Also, the inside is not glazed, so if you pour water directly into it, the water will seep out over time. If you want to decorate flowers, put water in another container, put it in this and decorate the flowers. Weight: 481g

Japanese Antique Pottery Hanging Vase/Edo/1800s/Boat-Shaped Vase
Located in Sammu-shi, Chiba
This is a black-glazed boat-shaped pottery made in the late Edo period of Japan. This will be a hanging vase. Pour water directly into this and decorate the flowers. Also, perhaps this is a pottery called Seto-yaki. Seto is an ancient kiln located in Aichi Prefecture. Various shapes and colors were produced there, and in the late Edo period, dark glazed pottery was also produced. When a dark brown glaze is applied, the areas with thick glaze look black, and the areas with thin glaze look brown. I put water directly into this and left it for a day, but there was no water leakage. I would say it is in very good condition. Although it is a small item, it has a very strong presence. It has a glossy and elegant appearance. There are many types of Seto pottery...
