GEOFFREY BAXTER for Whitefriars; "Bark" Tangerine orange. England, 1960s.
About the Item
Orange textured glass vase. The design of this piece was the brainchild of Geoffrey Baxter, who joined Whitefriars in 1954, bringing a renewed air to the firm and creating a successful range of textured glass in 1967. The Bark model is one of the earliest examples of the technique that catapulted Baxter's career. The history of the Whitefriars Glass Company dates back to the seventeenth century, founded by James Powell and Sons, it is not until 1834, when the manufacture acquires its iconic name. They achieved great notoriety for their stained glass windows for churches and in the nineteenth century, inserted in the Arts & Crafts movement became a reference to decorate the Red House of William Morris. This boom continued during the Art Deco period and only fell into decline due to the war situation in Europe at the beginning of the century. However, in 1951, the Festival of Britain, revitalized the interest in the firm that was nurtured by new designers such as Geoffrey Baxter, who managed to extol the craft tradition towards contemporaneity.
