Beautiful Vase from Ulrica Hydman-Vallien Kosta Boda

About the Item

Ulrica Hydman Vallien glass vase with head shape, white glass and stylistic features. It is mouth-blown and hand-decorated, which gives it a unique feel. Ulrica designed the vase during the 2000s as part of the "Open minds" series. Iconic design from Kosta Boda!. Ulrica Hydman was born on March 24, 1938 in Åkersberga. She was the daughter of Stig Johan Hydman and Margit Billberg-Johansson. She received her art education at the Konstfack in Stockholm. There she went to study glass and ceramics in 1958. She was taught by designer Stig Lindberg, among others. During her studies, Hydman gained professional knowledge in the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain. She graduated in 1962. In September 1963, Hydman married artist Bertil Vallien, whom she met at the Konstfack. Together they lived in Åfors. The couple also spent time on Stockholm's archipelago and abroad. For example, they lived in Los Angeles for two years and Hydman taught at the Pilchuck Glass School (1980-1986) in the American Stanwood and at the German Frauenau Bild-Werk. Hydman and Vallien undertook study trips to Mexico and Senegal, among others. Together they had two sons, Hampus and Markus. From 1972, Hydman worked as a designer at the Åfors glassworks, which later became part of glass producer Kosta Boda. She died of a heart attack in 2018, three days before her 80th birthday.
