Impressive, sculptural and highly decorative, 19th century morter. This near bucket-size morter is the largest and heaviest we have seen and owned to date and this wonderful antique is in excellent condition. Today they are mostly known for use in the kitchen, but in 19th century Europe these were mostly used by doctors, pharmacists and chemists for grinding and mixing substances into powders, for medicinal purposes. This all handcrafted eye catcher comes with a satyr (or sater) sculpture on the front and back and the handles are like gargoyles or grotesk busts.
