Albert Paley Monumental Vase

About the Item

Albert Paley Studio, sculptural vase formed, forged, and fabricated of steel with a stainless steel insert. The work has been published in The Art of Albert Paley and in numerous catalogs for exhibitions. Small edition of 4 [Signed Paley 1993] Authenticated by Paley Studios. Paley earned both a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts from the Tyler School of Art, a part of Temple University in Philadelphia. He initially worked as a goldsmith and moved to Rochester, New York, in 1969 to teach at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where he now holds an endowed chair. His career move from Goldsmith to Metal Sculptor is well explained in an exciting interview by Cathleen McCarthy. Paley designed Animals Always, his first representational work, a sculpture located at the southeast corner of the St. Louis Zoological Park in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1998, he received the Artist of the Year Award of the Arts & Cultural Council for Greater Rochester.

Monumental Ceramic Rectangular Vase by Albert Green
Located in Dallas, TX
A potter and painter, Albert Green (1914-1994) earned an international reputation for his ceramics, stoneware, and canvases. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, he studied painting at the Art Students League in New York City, supporting himself with retail jobs selling men’s clothing. But in 1946 a chance encounter with a display of contemporary Japanese pottery inspired him on the spot to switch from painting to pottery. Green learned pottery techniques through engineering manuals and applied his knowledge of college chemistry to teach himself glazing. “In those days I looked at pots constantly,” he said. “I’d travel 100 miles to look at a good pot. I simply taught myself.” He took his painting skills and applied them to his clay works, creating pieces that critics praised for their painterly qualities and subtle sense of color. In 1976, he retired from the retail clothing...
