20th Century Italian Solid Silver Potiche

About the Item

800 solid silver potiche. Completely handmade this "lidded vase" has been embossed with scrolls which make it typically in the Baroque style. Masterfully executed, this vase among superlative embossing has been knurled, i.e. tapped thousands of times with a very small hammer, making the embossing evident and creating a perfect chromatic contrast. The lid has the same design and workmanship. The important knob was made with the fusion technique to then be screwed and therefore detachable for cleaning the vase. When it comes to potiche vase (or just "potiche") the first thing that springs to mind is the particular lemma with French-speaking characteristics. As it is legitimate to assume upon hearing the pronunciation, the word "potiche" derives from the French and its meaning is an all-to-say; leaving out the most common meaning, i.e. that of "vase", the term has others which, in mass culture, are assigned to different contexts. Just think of what is perhaps the most iconic meaning of the word: "beautiful statue" With "potiche" we can also understand other meanings. However, the most used and known is always the one attached to the vase, whose fame - especially in Italy - is slowly establishing itself. Being hosted in an Italian home and noticing a potiche placed on a piece of furniture would not be strange or unusual at all. Potiche vases are now used as decorative objects, but they were once used for different purposes, despite their beauty being recognized and sought after even in antiquity. Its origins, in ceramics, date back to the eastern territory, to be precise Chinese, to the time almost immemorial of the Ming dynasty. At the time, potiche were mainly used by women to store aromatic herbs and cosmetics. However, the aesthetics they possessed and which they gave back to the furnishings meant that they were also given as gifts, and not just as a token of love between husband and wife. With extreme truth, the same can be said of our days, since vases of this kind are still donated even at important receptions.
