2 Handle Striped Confit Pot
About the Item
This hand-thrown 2-handle striped confit pot, made from terracotta in Puglia during the mid-1800s, is a classic example of rural Italian pottery. Originally used for preserving foods in olive oil, it reflects the practical and resourceful lifestyle of the time. The pot’s contents would have been ladled out as needed and kept fresh under a linen cloth or wooden lid. The partial glazing, applied inside and around the top edge, served both hygienic purposes and cost-saving measures, as glazing the entire pot was considered too expensive.
Crafted from earthy terracotta, this confit pot is distinguished by its simple yet elegant striped design and two sturdy handles, making it easy to move and transport. Its rustic aesthetic and historical charm make it a versatile piece, suitable for display as a decorative antique or as a functional item in a modern home. The natural variations in texture and form add to its character, offering a one-of-a-kind piece of history.
