Essay
Exhibited in plaster at the Salon of 1882 (no. 4331), Dumaige's statue of Camille Desmoulins has become well-regarded as one of his most powerful compositions. The original was given by Dumaige to the Musée de Rouen. It captures Desmoulins delivering his powerful and poignant call to arms before the Bastille storming, the drama of the scene almost operatic as he knocks the chair over behind him, grasping the loose pages of his speech in his closed fist while he loses himself in the rhetoric.
Camille Desmoulins was a French journalist, lawyer, and revolutionary, recognized for his pivotal role in the French Revolution. Born in Guise, France, he studied law at the Collège Louis-le-Grand in Paris, where he befriended future revolutionary leaders, including Maximilien Robespierre. Desmoulins gained prominence on July 12, 1789, when his impassioned speech at the Palais-Royal incited the storming of the Bastille two days later, marking a critical moment in the Revolution.
As a journalist, Desmoulins founded and edited Les Révolutions de France et de Brabant, a radical publication that criticized the monarchy and aristocracy. His writing was instrumental in shaping revolutionary sentiment, blending incisive political critique with populist rhetoric. Despite his early radicalism, Desmoulins later advocated for moderation during the Reign of Terror, aligning himself with the Dantonist faction. This shift ultimately led to his downfall.

To be able to hand carve a young girl sitting on a pillow (out of a rock of alabaster) with such a perfect body posture whilst also being able to give here the perfect facial expression of a very happy yet shy girl and the incredibly detailed manner in which this was done, reveils the work of the master sculptor that Emilio Fiaschi was. It is not for no reason that larger sculptures by this world renowned sculptor realize much higher figure prices here on 1stdibs and at some of the most well known auction houses in and outside of Europe. Fiaschi clearly was one of those sculptors of probably the last generation of Italian master sculptors. No matter how much we try to capture the true beauty of these antique sculptures on camera, we always seem to fail, because this small size masterpiece too is much better looking in real life than in any of our photos. Especially her facial feautures are so good and realistic / lively that this truly is one of those antiques that we refer to as an antique with a soul. Only a true artisan and master carver is capable of creating such realistic and 'emotional details' and it makes this striking girl look even more endearing and adorable. At some point in time two restaurations were done to the pillow where two hairlines must have cracked due to rough handling. This is best seen in images 15, 16 and 17. Louis Vidal, Vidal the blind or Vidal-Navatel is a French sculptor born on December 6, 1831 in Nîmes and who passed on May 9th, 1892 in the 12th district of Paris.
Born to an unknown father and Sophie Vidal-Navatel, he grew up in a family of artists, having for stepfather the painter Alexandre Colin who married his mother in second marriage and for half-brother Paul-Alfred Colin. He studied anatomy but became blind around 1853, which prevented him from pursuing this path.
He studied with the animal sculptors Antoine-Louis Barye and Pierre Louis Rouillard and became an animal sculptor himself by replacing sight with touch. This faculty enabled him to create portraits, he perceived the shape of faces by touching them and sculpted them in clay, and remains known as the author of a sculpture representing a roaring lion, as well as that of a bull in bronze, donated by the State to the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nîmes in 1867.
Louis Vidal worked in particular with Alfred Barye, son of his master Antoine-Louis Barye. He became a professor of modeling in 1888 at the École Braille in Paris.

On April 8, 1841, Hippolyte Ferrat was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under James Pradier. He was awarded the Second Prix de Rome in 1850. He exhibited at the Salon from 1849 to 1870. In 1849, he designed The Fall of Icarus, which is now exhibited at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
In 1859, Hippolyte Ferrat created a statue of politician François Denis Tronchet for the Conseil d'État. In 1860, a monumental fountain by Théophile de Tournadre6 was built in the center of the Place de la Rotonde in Aix-en-Provence. Of the three statues at the top, Ferrat created the allegory of the Beaux-Arts.

A fine model of a rural young farmer resting against a rocky outcrop to sharpen his scythe, the base of which has been set in the hay collected in a pile beside the rock; the naturalistic base is signed along the back in his typical nearly cursive script "Math. Moreau".
