Fossil Ferns mounted in original design acrylic base

About the Item

Name: Alethopteris Origin: Llewellyn St. Clair Formation, Pennsylvania Period: Carboniferous 300 to 360 million years ago They are plants similar to ferns, they were among the largest of the time, the trees reached a height of 10 Mt. and their branches reached up to 7 Mt. in length. A very particular characteristic of this formation is that during the strong storms that occurred during this period, many of the plants died and were sunk in the swampy bottom of the lagoons, without oxygen, creating the perfect environment for fossilization, in the first instance by the slowness and low pressure, the pyrite replaced the organic material giving an orange color, then as the temperature and pressure increased, the pyrite was replaced by pyrophyllite, which produced its characteristic white color. It is common, however, to find plates with both white and orange, making them very interesting pieces for this unique collection mounted in an acrylic case of original design.

Plants are multicellular, photosynthetic eucaryotes. The oldest known land plant body fossils are Silurian in age. Fossil root traces of land plants are known back to the Ordovician era. The Devonian was the critical time interval during which land plants flourished, and Earth experienced its first “greening” of the land. The earliest land plants were small and simple and probably remained close to bodies of water. By the Late Devonian, land plants had evolved large, tree-sized bodies, and the first-ever forests appeared.

Glossopteris is probably the most familiar fossil leaf...
