Chinese Petite Gilt String of Charms, c. 1900

About the Item

This petite Chinese jewelry chain dates to the early 20th century and is strung with an array of petite bells and good luck charms. Among the charms is a bat, a stone chime, two little fans and two repoussé bells of Buddha's hand citron. Together, these motifs convey the classic idiom that "virtuous deeds lead to blessings." In the center of the chain hangs a double fish charm, a Buddhist motif for abundance and marital bliss. Elevated by a custom steel mount, this storied jewelry chain lives on as a delicate sculptural object. From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer.
