Hanging Rachis With Tail, Hand Built Ceramic Mobile, Stoneware and Porcelain
About the Item
There's something about art that hangs in space rather than on the wall. This piece, "Hanging Rachis With Tail" consists of graduating stoneware arcs with porcelain spacers. It has a long teardrop shape, like a tail hanging at the bottom. Each piece was individually hand-formed, with a textured surface, hollowed out and painted with a black underglaze before firing. The porcelain spacers are also hand-formed of bare clay. Like other pieces in the Rachis Series, this one references the spine. Instead of sitting still on a pedestal, it hangs freely in space, animated and ever changing. Since the parts are hollow, it weighs under 15 pounds. Strung with a coated picture-hanging wire with loop at top. From the Artist's private collection.

Helena Starcevic Ceramics
Helena Starcevic Ceramics produces work that straddles the line between fine and decorative art. Each piece is one of a kind, hand-built entirely by the artist in her New York studio. Taking inspiration from the natural world, Ms. Starcevic's work includes references to the stark beauty of the desert, prehistoric cave paintings, and the human form (within and without). Everything is filtered through Ms. Starcevic’s own singular aesthetic, at once quiet yet strong, meditative, and beautiful. Pieces are made in different clays and finishes, and at different scales. Groupings are available. Helena Starcevic’s ceramic pieces are held in private collections across the US and Europe. She has held numerous residencies including one at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City.
