"Steelworker" Rare Late Art Deco Sculpture of Worker, 1950s, Austria

About the Item

An extremely rare and powerful depiction of an Industrial worker with the tool of his trade at his feet, this steelworker, simply draped in a leather apron and heavy mittens, was sculpted by Karl Nieschlag. The artist studied under Josef Müllner at the master school of sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts at the Schillerplatz in Vienna from 1935-1939, and then attended the master school for stage design under Emil Pirchan. This sculpture is reminiscent of the masterful work of Max Kalish in America. Its patina, a charcoal grey with tinges of chalky white, is particularly handsome, and the contrast between the worker's nude back and heavy mittens is striking. Also of interest is the text in German at the base of the sculpture, executed in a handsome typeface: United Austrian Eisenu Steelworks Linz-Danube.
