About the Item
In the exquisite statuette, "Danseuse" by Marcel Bouraine and Gabriel Argy-Rousseau, a graceful dancer twists her torso while turning her head to the right. One arm arches behind her head, holding a flowing piece of translucent silk that trails behind her as she dries her neck. The silk cascades elegantly over her knee, curves around her hips, and drapes over her shoulder. The dancer’s pose is inspired by the renowned marble relief Nike Adjusting Her Sandal from the parapet of the Parthenon, capturing a harmonious blend of fluidity and grace with a touch of casual elegance. She stands poised, with one leg slightly raised and bent at the knee, her toes pointed en pointe, embodying a sense of delicate balance. Her pedestal features Nilotic motifs, including Egyptian papyrus and swirling whirlpool (tourbillon) designs, enriching the sculpture's timeless charm.

Macklowe Gallery Curator's Notes:
Actually born Gabriel Rousseau, the famed maker changed his moniker to include the first four letters of his wife's last name upon their marriage, and signed all of his pieces as "Argy-Rousseau." Gabriel Argy-Rousseau's wife was a woman of Greek heritage, whose worldliness greatly influenced and broadened the artist's practice, particularly in his inclusion of patterning that resemble Greek friezes, as we can see here.
