About the Item
A striking gilt bronze sculpture, Thai, second half 20th century.
Prince Rama is a central figure in the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana. He is depicted as the seventh avatar of the god Vishnu and is widely regarded as the ideal man—courageous, righteous, and virtuous. In the epic, Rama is the eldest son of King Dasharatha of Ayodhya and is known for his unwavering devotion to duty, family, and dharma (righteousness).
The Ramayana follows his life, including his exile to the forest, the abduction of his wife Sita by the demon king Ravana, and his subsequent journey to rescue her. Along the way, he forms alliances with various characters, including the monkey king Hanuman, and ultimately defeats Ravana in a great battle.
Rama’s story is one of devotion, loyalty, honor, and the triumph of good over evil, and he is considered an ideal model for living a virtuous life in Hindu tradition.
