"Ivory Coast Figures", Important Art Deco Sculptures for Eugène Printz Interior

About the Item

Representing the fascination that so many French and Belgian sculptors had in the people of the colonies established by their nations in West and Central Africa, culminating in the exposition colonial Internationale held in Paris in 1931, this gorgeous and sensitive depiction of nude and seminude figures from the Cote d'Ivoire were sculpted by Jean-Marie Camus. The nude male figure is playing a traditional three-part drum, and the semi-nude female figure is balancing a large bunch of bananas on her head. Beautifully sculpted and finished in an espresso-hued paint, the pair was sculpted for an important home designed by Euge'ne Printz and were originally sold by Christie's years ago.
