Gilt Bronze and White Marble Bust of a Woman by Gory
About the Item
This charming sculpture of a young woman is the work of the accomplished Italian-born sculptor, Affortunato Gory (1895-1925). Gory is best-known for his sculptures of women and children, which are often crafted from a combination of marble, gilt bronze (ormolu) and ivory. In this way, these works evoke ancient Egyptian and Greek chryselephantine sculptures. Gory was educated by Augusto Rivalta at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, and later moved to France, where he continued his education under the sculptor Victorien-Antoine Basset. Gory exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français several times in the peak of his career between 1902-1923. This piece is signed ‘A Gory/ Paris’.
The bust sculpture depicts a beautiful woman, her head crafted from a pure white marble. Her eyes are closed, and she has a peaceful expression on her face. The woman’s head is turned slightly to the left. Her long wavy hair is tied up in a plaited chignon, and held back from her face by a gilt bronze (ormolu) headband. The lady wears a blouse, which has been finely cast in gilt bronze. The sculpture is set on a red-veined, rose-colored marble plinth. This small, exquisitely-crafted piece will look beautiful placed on a pedestal, mantelpiece, or table in a well-furnished interior.

Affortunato Gory
Affortunato Gory (Gori) was a French-Italian artist who specialized in Art Deco figurative sculpture, often combining materials such as bronze, ivory, and marble to dazzling effect. Born in 1895 in Florence, Italy, Gory emigrated to France after studying with noted sculptor Augusto Rivalta at the Accademia di Belle Arti in his home city. He continued to practice and learn from the French artist Victorien-Antoine Bastet after his move to Paris, and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français on multiple occasions. Little else is known about the artist, who died in 1925.

Bronze Bust Sculpture on Marble Plinth
Located in London, GB
This strikingly naturalistic bronze sculpture was created in Florence in 1895. The bust depicts an elderly man, most likely a farm worker, carrying a heavy sack of grain over his shoulder. He wears an old slightly ragged shirt which is open at his chest, revealing his thin body underneath. The man looks out into the distance on the left, his eyebrows slightly furrowed. His mouth is open as though he is breathing heavily with the strain of the work or calling out to someone unknown to the viewer.
The sculptor has accurately rendered every detail, with great truth to reality. The faint stubble on the man's chin and the wrinkles on his face and hands are faithfully portrayed. In its naturalistic style and its everyday, unidealised subject-matter, this bronze may be described as a work of Realism. The Realist movement flourished in the arts in Europe in this period, the 19th Century.
The bust is signed ‘G Rossi...
