French Art Deco sculpture “Female Nude”, bronze, Pierre Chenet workshop

About the Item

Gorgeous sculpture depicting a female nude in bronze with an ochre finish that has been achieved using a technique called “Patiné à l’acide”, which consists of applying acid to the bronze, corroding the material, giving it that ochre finish, as if it were a patina. It follows an original model signed by Pierre Chenet, probably the work of his workshop. Pierre Chenet was a sculptor of French origin who stood out for his bronze animal sculptures. Precisely because of the originality of the subject matter, this piece stands out from the rest of his production. The sculpture depicts a naked woman, sitting with her legs crossed over each other and resting one elbow on the knee on the same side. With the other hand she holds her leg, so that she remains stable. She has a serene, pensive or introspective expression. It is an Art Deco style work, reflected in the exoticism of the woman's face, with oriental features. This is reinforced by the bracelet that adorns her wrist, which is reminiscent of the characteristic jade bracelets common in the East. These bracelets are given to young girls by their families as a kind of amulet to attract wealth and protection. About Art Deco Style Art Deco, short for the French term Arts Décoratifs, and sometimes simply called Déco, is a style of visual arts, architecture, and product design, which first appeared in France in the 1910s (just before World War I) and flourished especially in the United States, but also in Europe, during the 1920s and 1930s. Art Deco combined modern styles with fine craftsmanship and rich materials. During its heyday, it represented luxury, glamour, exuberance, and a belief in social and technological progress. From its beginnings, Art Deco was influenced by the bold geometric forms of Cubism and the Vienna Secession; the vivid colors of Fauvism and the Ballets Russes; the updated craftsmanship of furniture from the eras of Louis XVI and Louis Philippe I; and the exotic styles of China, Japan, India, Persia, ancient Egypt, and Mayan art. It featured rare and expensive materials, such as ebony and ivory, and exquisite craftsmanship.
