Diana of Gabies. Bronze, marble. Raingo Frères, France, 19th century

About the Item

Diana of Gabies. Bronze, marble. Raingo Frères, France, circa the second half of the 19th century. Signed at the base. Bronze figure on a stone base depicting a lady wearing sandals, adjusting a draped garment (called a chiton), raising her arms to put on a brooch. Her wavy hair is tied up with a ribbon. The inscription "Raingo Fres." can be seen on the bronze base, alluding to the foundry that made it. The work is inspired by a marble sculpture also known as Artemis of Gabios because it may represent this goddess. It was discovered in Gabios (near Rome, Italy) by Gavin Hamilton (Lanarkshire, 1723–Rome, 1798) on the land of Prince Borghese, who sold it to Napoleon in 1807. From that moment on, it became part of the collections of the Louvre Museum in Paris (inventory Ma. 529). The original is attributed to Praxiteles (although there is currently some doubt about this). Raingo Frères was founded in 1823 by the four sons of Belgian watchmaker and metalworker Zacharie Raingo (who moved to Paris in 1813). They were named Adolphe, Charles, Denis, and Dorsant. Established as an industrial and commercial enterprise, the company quickly gained notoriety for its bronze work, in addition to its reputation as a clockmaker. It created works for a host of noblemen and royalty, including the Duke of Chartres, King George V of England, and Emperor Napoleon III of France. They exhibited their work at the International Expositions in Paris in 1867, 1878, and 1889, winning several awards. Works from this company are held in prominent private collections and institutions such as the Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas (Madrid, Spain), the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), the Royal Collection Trust, and more. Antique 19th Century Raingo Frères Ormolu Bronze Cartel Wall Clock with Cherub
By Raingo Frères
Located in Madrid, ES
Exhibiting the fine design and craftsmanship of French clockmakers Raingo Frères (Raingo Brothers), this impressively large clock, measuring over 1 meter tall ( 3 feet +), is an example of the “Second Rococo” period beginning circa 1830, when the highly ornate "Cartel" style of the early 18th century came back into fashion. The clock is crowned at top center by the figure of a putto or cherub, holding in one hand a dove and the other a garland of flowers. This allegorical figure can represent innocence or purity, and was a popular subject for sculptors of the 19th century. The term "Cartel clock" comes from the French "Pendule à Cartel" meaning roughly "clock in a frame for the wall" - the word "Cartel" meaning in this context "decorative frame". These clocks were almost always made from gilt bronze (also known as "ormolu") and highly decorated. The clock is complete and includes a winding key, and will be checked by our specialist clockmaker to ensure it is functioning properly before shipping. Established in the early 1800s, Raingo Frères was one of the leading makers of precision clocks...
