Allegorical Bronze Statue of Bellona or Minerva Roman Goddesses of War

About the Item

An extremely rare allegorical bronze depicting either Bellona an ancient Roman goddess of war or Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, medicine, commerce, handicrafts, poetry, the arts in general, and later, war. Bellona is commonly portrayed wearing a plumed helmet such as the one in this work but dressed in armour, or at least a breastplate with a skirt beneath. In this work, the goddess is not dressed in armour but is classically draped with her breasts and back totally bare. She is seated on a sphere depicting the world, the left hand fully outstretched while in the right hand she holds a spear like mast. Slung across the right shoulder resting on her back is a shield with a gorgon head on it intended to instil terror in her enemies. This is another symbol associated with Bellona but this is where it stops. Strewn all round the feert of the goddess at the base of the bronze are various objects including an artist's palette, an open scroll, a telescope, a pair of callipers, a chisel, a hammer, a mandolin, an ionic capital, a helmeted classical bust and books including one titled " Vie Des Peintres" or "Life of Artists" . These objects symbolize the Arts, Sculpture, Architecture, Astronomy. Music and Literature of which Minerva is the goddess. Adding to the intrigue is a putto kneeling at the foot of the goddess hands held together as if imploring her for mercy from the destruction at her feet. Surprisingly for the quality of the bronze, it is not signed and could therefore be a copy of an actual classical bronze somewhere in a Museum or a private collection. The work does however have the number 3903 stamped at the back rear corner of the base. A patinated cast bronze statue of a classically draped Greek scholar sitting sideways on a Klismos chair with the trademark griphons as front leg supports, the subject holding a pen in his right hand and an open scroll on the other left signed "Moreau" inscribed on one side of the chair. There are no visible foundry marks. Presumably the signature stands for Mathurin Moreau, a 19 Century French sculptor born 1822, and son of noted sculptor Jean Baptiste Moreau. In 1841, the 19 year old Mathirin entered the École des Beaux Arts in Paris and, the following year, won the Second Grand Prix de Rome with his sculpture Diodemus removing the Palladium.
