African Benin Yoruba Oba Head of Queen Idia Large Bronze Head Bust Sculpture

About the Item

A wonderful, relatively large bronze bust/head sculpture of Idia, the first Queen Mother of the 16th century Kingdom of Benin (in present-day Nigeria). Traditionally, the ruler's role was reserved for the Oba or male king. Queen mothers were viewed as instrumental to the protection and well-being of the Oba and their surrounding kingdom. Idia was seen by her people as a leader, warrior, politician, and spiritual guide and played a significant role in the rise and reign (circa 1504 to circa 1550) of her son Esigie to Oba following the death of his father Oba Ozolua. She was instrumental in securing his title and guiding him in the aftermath. In recognition of her contribution to the Kingdom, she was the first Queen Mother to be conferred with the title and political office of ‘Iyoba’. She would be remembered fondly as a shining example of commitment, leadership, courage, and service to her people. Many historians believe she was the true power behind her son's throne. This piece features Idia’s unique lattice-patterned and self-invented ukpe-okhue curved conical headdress with falling strands of beads and a neck bound with a tight choker. The original work was created in the 16th century (an original 16th-century sculpture can be seen in The British Museum, London). We are listing this sculpture as mid-20th century (1950-1970) but it could be older. From a Los Angeles collection. A hefty, tall, powerful piece with a gorgeous patina. Would make for an eye-catching stand-alone art accent sculpture in about any setting. Dimensions: 20.5" high, 7.5" wide, 10" deep
