About the Item

This large antique sculpture composition is a beautiful example of the works of one France favourite sculptors, Hippolyte Moreau. Crafted in France, circa 1880, the sculpture sits on a round black and green marble base and features two young beauties carrying a basket full of grapes. The art work called "Les Vendanges", translated as "the wine harvest", is typical of Moreau's works glorifying the everyday man and woman going about their rural lives; it shows his appreciation for humanity, contribution to French culture, and natural rustic charm and beauty! The important spelter sculpture is in excellent condition with a rich patinated bronze finish. The piece is signed on the base H. Moreau. Hippolyte Francois Moreau (1832-1927), was a French sculptor famous for his bronze statuettes of young women. Born in Dijon, France, and son of the renowned sculptor Jean-Baptiste Moreau, he grew up learning from his father’s workshop. As a young man, Moreau moved to Paris to study further under Francois Jouffroy at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, first exhibiting at the Salon of French artists in 1863 and continuing to show work there until 1914. In both 1878 and 1900, he won medals for his work—large scale, decorative pieces such as vases and statuettes—at the Universal Exposition in Paris. Among his notable sculptures is his 1880 statue of the celebrated French mathematician Alexis Clairaut, which now permanently occupies one of the facades of the City Hall of Paris. He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, and today many of his works are collected in the Museum of Fine Arts in Dijon. Measures: 10.5" diameter 22.5" height.

French late 19th century spelter sculpture by Hippolyte Moreau fitted with original 1 7/8" thick rouge griotte marble base. Hippolyte was one of the famous Moreau brothers, all of whom were sculptors. He was born in Dijon France in 1832 and died in 1927. This statue, in a warm chocolate brown patina depicts a diaphanously dressed woman with flowing scarf overhead and winged cherob at her side resting on the crest of a wave and shell. Hippolyte Moreau exhibited in the Salon des Artistes Français at the turn of the century and won a medal at the Universal Exposition in 1878 and another at the 1900 World Expo.
