Pair of Orientalist Sculpted Busts by Guillemin

About the Item

Pair of Orientalist sculpted busts by Guillemin French, circa 1880-1890 Male figure: Height 89.5cm, width 65cm, depth 40cm Female figure: Height 79.5cm, width 65cm, depth 40cm It is the exceptional quality of the casting, as well as the important provenance of these busts which makes them truly worthy of the title 'masterpiece'. Entitled 'Janissaire du sultan Mahmoud II' (Janissary of Sultan Mahmoud II) and 'Jeune fille du Caire' (Young Girl of Cairo), these models were first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1880. Visitors to the Salon praised the pair for their naturalistic style and detail, and for their patinated finish. The sculptor, Emile Coriolan Hippolyte Guillemin (French, 1841-1907), had already gained a reputation for his fantastic portrayals of Oriental figures, a popular subject in the late 19th Century. This pair of work furthered his already stellar reputation. These busts surely rank among the finest examples not only of Guillemin's work, but of Orientalist art as a whole in the late 19th Century. Each bust is raised on a veined red marble plinth.

Pair of Orientalist Bronze Busts by Cordier, 1861
By Charles Henri Joseph Cordier 1
Located in London, GB
Pair of Orientalist bronze busts by Cordier, 1861 French, 1861 Man: Height 42cm, width 32cm, depth 18cm Woman: Height 40cm, width 26cm, depth 16cm This impressive pair of bronze busts were made by the renowned French sculptor Charles-Henri-Joseph Cordier (1827-1905). Known for his Orientalist works in bronze and marble, Cordier gained inspiration from his visits to Algeria. The male figure of this pair is after a study made during one of these visits. The figures form a wonderfully contrasting pair. The male bust wears a more sombre, downturned expression, whilst the female smiles almost sleepily. Both faces are expertly carved to achieve a human likeness, and the two figures are similarly dressed in embellished shirts and robes. The patination is exceptional throughout, providing light and shade to the facial features and garments. Gilding can also be seen on the woman’s earring...

A pair of Orientalist terracotta figures by Johann Maresch Austrian, Late 19th Century Man: height 49cm, width 20cm, depth 15cm Woman: height 48cm, width 20cm, depth 15cm Depicting a woman and a man of similar appearance, age, dress, and in a similarly spritely, lively, and engaging manner, these figures were made by Johann Maresch in the late nineteenth century, c.1880. A skilled Austrian maker, similar in output to the more famous Friedrich Goldscheider, Maresch gave these figures a tangible vitality and energy to their representation, showing them as hard-working yet undaunted and undimmed by their labours. Their manner of dress is similar, even down to the similarities in the colours used to paint them. She carries a bright orange-red urn...
