Matte Black Ceramic TOTEM, Round and Rectangular Forms, Organic Crinkled Cup Top

About the Item

One in a new series of modern TOTEMS consisting of soft round or rectangular forms on small conical feet. The shapes begin as a solid piece. They are then hollowed out, stacked and in this case, coated in a brown/black clay slip. The top of this one is a roughly formed organic cup shape, pinched and pressed to show the work of the artist's hand, and to ensure its uniqueness. The slip is applied by brush and the pieces are fired twice. This slip creates a matte surface with tiny silver specks and dark brown tones, catching light and creating depth. In different light it looks chocolate brown more than black. Strong and majestic on its own, wonderful as an installation with several other sculptures. Completely hand built by artist Helena Starcevic. Signed with artist's signature chop underneath.
