A valedictorian graduate in 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Europe during World War II, earning a Bronze Star for bravery. After the war, he attended Western Kentucky University, where he discovered his passion for art before pursuing optometry at the Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago. Inspired by the vibrant artistic community and the Art Institute of Chicago, Downing's desire to paint flourished. He held his first exhibition in 1950 and later settled in Paris after a return trip funded by a war bond refund. While supporting himself through various jobs, he gained recognition after meeting Pablo Picasso in 1952. Downing's artistic style evolved towards abstract collage and painting, and by 1960, he was a full-time artist. His diverse body of work is held in prestigious collections, including the Paris Museum of Modern Art and the Smithsonian Institution. Additionally, Downing was an accomplished poet, earning the title "Poet of Color and Light" for his literary contributions. He lived in Ménerbes, France, for over 40 years, maintaining a studio in Paris until his passing on December 29, 2007, at the age of 82.

Awesome Mixed-Media Birdcage Sculpture
By Fay Sciarra
Located in Hopewell, NJ
A beautiful and thoughtful found object sculpture titled Cage of Fear made from a vintage birdcage collaged with gingham, leopard fabric and cigar box wrappings. Inside the cage is a 3 dimensional arrangement of mixed-media objects including childrens' blocks that spell F E A R, the hand of a clock, a disturbing plastic doll that hangs from a pulley, and deer horns. The interior of the cage is a metaphor for the jail of fear we construct in our own minds, while outside the cage there remains a constant of beauty and hope. An antique shamrock paper clip at the top suggests luck, a Murano glass piece of candy and vintage brass cherub...

Mixed-Media Sculpture Dror Karta
By Dror Karta
Located in Palm Springs, CA
A wonderful mixed-media sculpture by the noted Israeli Artist Dror Karta. This sculpture was in a traveling exhibition and is pictured in the book. The exhibition was about Palestinian and Israeli artists, who were given the same bowl to start. This is the actual piece. It is signed as well. It is a ceramic bowl, four glass leaves and lots of little bottles inside loose. The glass leaves are molded into the ceramic base by some kind of white epoxy. The leaves have been repaired at the base with the epoxy and quite a few of the little bottles have damage. There is a small chip on the underside. A brief Bio of the artist follows from the artist's website follows; Biography 1965 Born in Natanya, Israel 1985 Wounded during military service 1988-1992 Study graphic design in "Hadasa-vizo Canada college of design" Haifa, Israel 1994 Opens studio for painting, sculpturing and designing 1998 Moves to Ein-Hod Artist Village, Israel 2001-2003 Lives and works in Amsterdam, NL Group exhibitions 1998 "Shesh-Besh", Pyramid contemporary art gallery, Haifa, Israel 1998 "60 Horse Power", holiday of holidays art...
