MAGNIFICENT! DIRECT METAL SCULPTURE "PHOENIX RISING" MID CENTURY ABSTRACT ART! ATTRIBUTED TO SEYMOUR LIPTON Signed & Titled "Phoenix Rising" Lipton 1958 DIMENSIONS: 23" HIGH x 7" WIDE x 8" DEEP A top American abstract sculptor, Seymour Lipton was born in New York and interested in art quite early in life. He turned to sculpting after a brief fling as a dentist. He is most famous for his metal sculptures which came to define the "New York style" in the fifties. This work is simply magnificent! "Phoenix Rising" is both a visual and conceptual tour de force! The story of the Phoenix Bird rising up from the ashes has always been an allegory for victory from defeat and life after death. Dynamism abounds in Lipton's work and form and space are always directly linked to conceptual ideas! Here the Phoenix is depicted in its simplest form. A long neck and head proudly rise up and two sleek, giant wings curve downwards giving a sense of upward movement! Choice Italian marble provides a stable base & adds great detail!
