Printed Portrait of Josephine Bonaparte
About the Item
Encased in a geometric Art Deco frame, this small printed portrait depicts a young woman of French royalty, most likely Empress Josephine Bonaparte. Josephine Bonaparte was the Empress of France as the first wife of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte (1804-1810) and, as Napoleon's consort, she also reigned as Queen of Italy from1805 to1810. Following the French Revolution, Josephine became the undisputed leader of fashion during the early 19th-century as the most visible female figure of her era.
Similarly to Napoleon, her taste in clothing was inspired by Roman and Greek styles, thus differentiating herself from the 18th-century Rococo styles of Marie Antoinette. Here we see Josephine in a light blue empire waist dress adorned with a spiked lace collar, jewel embellishments, and a loosely draped fur cape. Known for her lavish taste in jewelry and imported fabrics, Josephine reinforced Paris’ position as the fashion capital of the world, ultimately boosting the French industry. This petite framed portrait recalls the rich history and influence of Josephine Bonaparte, a reminder to be your own tastemaker much like she was.

Oil Portrait of a Victorian Lady, c. 1850
Located in Chicago, IL
Painted in the 19th century, this exquisite miniature portrait wonderfully exemplifies realism in traditional oil painting. The small artwork is painted in the conventional portraiture style of the Old Masters, and achieves soft realism with fine brushwork and a subdued, neutral palette. The half length portrait depicts a fine Victorian woman dressed in all black with a delicate lace collar and bonnet. She wears a ruby broach...

Pair of Framed Chinese Ancestor Portraits, circa 1880s
Located in Chicago, IL
Believing that the departed continue to hold influence over the lives of the living, many Chinese households honor their ancestors in private family rituals, invoking their spirits for long life, health, and prosperity. Commemorative portraits, which came into vogue in the late Ming and Qing dynasties, were commissioned specifically for ancestor worship and were believed to house the spirits of the deceased. When properly cared for, one's ancestors were believed to be a powerful source of honor, protection, and good luck.
This pair of ancestor portraits was hand-painted in the late-19th century and beautifully depicts a Qing-dynasty couple. While some ancestral portraits offer a more stylized representation of one's ancestors, this particular pair is painted with incredible realism and life-like expressions. Rather than depict the pair in a regal hall wearing elaborate finery, the couple is shown in a quiet home environment, seated at either end of a square tea table. Their surroundings are minimal, practically undecorated, and they wear simple, matching blue silk robes. Two young children stand beside them, each trying to capture the attention of their grandparent. We love the painting's close attention to detail and the glimpse it offers of Qing-dynasty interiors - from the carved apron of the marble-top table to the red silk lotus slippers...

Miniature Portrait of a Distinguished Lady, Signed Stieler
Located in Delft, NL
Miniature portrait of a distinguished lady, signed Stieler.
Bronze frame behind oval round glass, 19th century
Signed Stieler, Joseph Karl Stieler (1781- Mainz - 1858 Munich) was a German painter.
The size is 10 cm x 7.5 cm x 1 cm
1820-1830
From 1820 until 1855 he worked as royal court painter of the Bavarian kings. He is known for his Neoclassical portraits, especially for the Gallery of Beauties at Nymphenburg Palace in Munich.
Born in the city of Mainz to a long-established family of engravers, punchcutters and die makers, Stieler received some artistic training from his father, August Friedrich Stieler (1736–1789). After the early death of his father, Joseph Karl autodidactically completed his apprenticeship and began his career as a painter of miniatures, which were increasingly sought after by bourgeois circles After Mainz had been occupied by French revolutionary troops in 1792, Stieler followed the expelled court of Prince-Archbishop Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal to Aschaffenburg. Here he met with the later Archbishop Karl Theodor Anton Maria von Dalberg, who became his most important patron and sponsor.
From 1802 to 1805 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in the master class of Heinrich Füger. Stieler's portrait style was most especially shaped during his work in the Parisian atelier of François Gérard, a student of Jacques-Louis David. In 1808, he established himself as an independent portraitist in the city of Frankfurt and in 1810 travelled through Italy. From 1812 he worked at the court of King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria.
In 1816, he again travelled to Vienna to paint the portrait of Emperor Francis I of Austria. Between February and April 1820, he worked on his portrait of Ludwig van Beethoven, which is probably the most well-known representation of the composer today. In 1847 he also painted the portrait of Lola Montez...
