19th C. French Victorian Louis XVI Gilt Bronze Alabaster Figural Clock PH Mourey
Located in Forney, TX
Elegant French Victorian era gilt bronze mounted alabaster antique mantel clock / shelf clock, attributed to master Parisian sculptor P.H. Mourey (1840-1910), with movement by renowned clockmaker Japey Frères (1776-1930s) circa 1870 Paris, France, second half of the 19th century, executed in luxurious Louis XVI taste, tastefully appointed, the neutral alabaster creates the perfect backdrop against the brilliant gilding. Having a soft, warm, creamy off-white alabaster base with subtle chalky beige undertones, shaped, with rounded sides, step molding and two hand-painted blue enamel parcel gilt turned tapering urn forms, raised on brass feet, decorated with lavish gilt metal ornamentation, including accents, ormolu flaming urn finials, unique recessed gilt brass perforated-like textured panels, and sculptural gilt bronze raised drum-form case, housing the classic white porcelain enameled dial with black Roman numerals, sophisticated gold-tone Breguet hands, framed by a beaded bezel, with must likely the original operational 8-day key-wind Japy Fils movement enclosed. Surmounted by an ornate brilliantly gilded spelter figural sculpture, finely detailed, depicting young boy and girl courting, holding a bird's nest with eggs over the housing, with large branching tree behind them, the couple posed leaning in to each other, wavy garb with incised detailing, standing on the alabaster base. Philippe H. Mourey (French, 1840-1910) was a master French sculptor, who produced a range of fine decorative art objects in the late 19th century. His work often combines painted porcelain panels and gilt metal mounts, similar to elements of this piece. PH Mourey was best known for his association with Japy Freres & Co. the noted 19th century Paris Clockmaker, and maker of this clocks movement. Mourey’s work can be viewed in various museums, especially in France, as well as major art collections, including the Royal Collection Trust in London. The Japy Frères workshop (1776-1930s) was started by Frédéric Japy in 1776 under a different name, eventually the iconic French clock and watchmaking firm was founded in 1806 by Frédéric Japy along with his sons, Pierre, Fritz and Louis, thus creating the trademark we know today, ‘Japy Freres’ or (Japy Brothers). Japy Frères won a number of medals at important exhibitions and achieved international recognition throughout much of the nineteenth century, including the prestigious Grand Medal of Honour, which was awarded to Japy in 1855 at the important Exposition Universelle Paris. - MARKS / SIGNED / HALLMARKED: Works stamped "Japy Fils depos 1855 medailler 1844 1840" circular medallion; "RS" within square, "2949" "55" Case housing: stamped "44", case underside "44" written in pencil, incised "IX", elaborate illegible writing in pencil, last word may say "Richebois?", possibly where the clock was to be sent or who it was commissioned by PROVENANCE / ACQUISITION: 09/2024- Acquired from the reputable auction house, Dallas Auction Gallery, Dallas Texas. Large Majestic & Lifelike Antique Alabaster Bald Eagle Sculpture w. Glass Eyes
Located in Lisse, NL
Magnificent hand-carved eagle on a rock sculpture. Most people are not capable of drawing a picture of an eagle, but this artist has sculpted a majestic and lifelike eagle out of a single rock of alabaster. That, to us, is amazing and it takes a truly gifted artisan. This beautifully hand carved eagle has exactly the strong and streamlined frame, the sharp eyes and the strong claws that this born predator needs in order to survive and prosper. This born hunter is a joy to watch. We date this marvelous eagle to around 1890-1900 and this life-like and very alert eagle is in excellent condition. The sculptor could not have picked a better rock of alabaster, because the many lines in this striking mineral stone are like the many small feathers that together make the 'fur' and wings of this majestic eagle. This eagle clearly just heard or saw something happening on the right of him, because his senses are clearly heightened and he looks ready to take off any second. Not only is this one of the most realistic eagle sculptures, it also has the best polished surface we have ever seen. From the tiny holes that you can see in the base (in image 14) it is clear that there would have been an antique brass...

Emilio FIASCHI Little Girl Alabaster Bust Sculpture, 1890s
Located in Saint-Amans-des-Cots, FR
Little girl alabaster bust sculpture by Emilio FIASCHI (1858-1941), France, 1890s. Direct carving. The details of the small corset and the lace collar are very finely done. The remarkable work of an outstanding sculptor. Height : 14.5"(37cm), Width : 7"(18cm), Depth : 5.1"(13cm). Very good condition. P. Emilio Fiaschi (1858 – 1941), also called Emiliano Fiaschi, was an Italian sculptor. He was born in Volterra and died in Florence, Italy. From 1883 to 1885, he studied at Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze and spent most of his career in Florence, Italy. He was skilled in sculpting both marble and alabaster and most often produced female nudes, usually smaller than life-size figures. His female nudes featured highly polished skin and emphasized the curves of hips and waistlines. A partial list of his works include Le Printemps (marble on black marble pedestal), Beatrice (marble), Courting Boy and Girl (white marble), Female nude partially draped (marble), A Good Book (marble), Reclining Beauty and Admirer (alabaster), Seated Maiden (Carved alabaster and marble), Standing Semi-Nude (marble), A Young Girl...

Amazing Gothic Revival Bronze Chandelier with Flying Phoenix Firebird Sculptures
Located in Lisse, NL
Large and remarkable, phoenix arms, five-light chandelier with unique, stylish and multi-colored alabaster shades. This rare and stunning antique chandelier is made in France and it embodies everything that European craftsmanship stood for in the early 1900s. With all its ancient and less ancient châteaux, its many Gothic churches and with all the monasteries, France is the country where most of the European Gothic Revival art and antiques were created. This sizeable, Medieval style chandelier is very impressive for two very good reasons. First of all, the design is unlike anything you ever saw. The five large and flying phoenix sculptures with their detailed wings, their long necks, their fierce looking heads and their pointy-flame-tails truly make this chandelier a work of lighting art. Secondly, when you realize that this chandelier is entirely handcrafted and put together with bronze parts only then you get an idea of the workmanship that it took to create this work of art. To make it even more impressive and special, this antique bronze light fixture...

Antique Hand Carved Alabaster Sculpture of a Smiling Shy Girl by Emilio Fiasschi
Located in Lisse, NL
Top quality carved shy girl on pillow, signed by P. Emilio Fiaschi (1858-1941) of Firenze/Florence. If you are a collector of antique and top-quality made works of art then this hand carved girl sculpture could be flying your way soon. Over the decades we have owned and sold a number of great sculptures made of all kinds of materials and this superbly carved girl is right up there with the best. To be able to hand carve a young girl sitting on a pillow (out of a rock of alabaster) with such a perfect body posture whilst also being able to give here the perfect facial expression of a very happy yet shy girl and the incredibly detailed manner in which this was done, reveils the work of the master sculptor that Emilio Fiaschi was. It is not for no reason that larger sculptures by this world renowned sculptor realize much higher figure prices here on 1stdibs and at some of the most well known auction houses in and outside of Europe. Fiaschi clearly was one of those sculptors of probably the last generation of Italian master sculptors. No matter how much we try to capture the true beauty of these antique sculptures on camera, we always seem to fail, because this small size masterpiece too is much better looking in real life than in any of our photos. Especially her facial feautures are so good and realistic / lively that this truly is one of those antiques that we refer to as an antique with a soul. Only a true artisan and master carver is capable of creating such realistic and 'emotional details' and it makes this striking girl look even more endearing and adorable. At some point in time two restaurations were done to the pillow where two hairlines must have cracked due to rough handling. This is best seen in images 15, 16 and 17. It is because of these old restauration to the pillow that we have priced this unique antique extra favourably. Thanks to its durability this marvelous alabaster girl...
