Fine Early 19th Century Empire Russian Inkstand, St. Petersburg, circa 1810

About the Item

A fine Russian Empire gilt- and patinated bronze desk top inkstand, St. Petersburg, circa 1810. Rectangular shaped base raised on four turned feet. Front and side panels decorated with swans drinking from a fountain, butterflies, shells and garlands. Above a central kneeling nude female figure with butterfly wings (Psyche) holding a large shell above her head as a pen rest. To her left fitment for the inkwell covered with a squirrel and to her right for the sand with a rooster finial. Literature: Arcadi Gaydamak, Russian Empire; Moscow-Paris, 2000. Page 224 with the illustration of an inkstand with almost identical base from the collection of the State History Museum, Moscow.

This very stylish French Empire gilt bronze and marble inkstand is a fine example. It is made from superb figured green marble. The triform base is raised onto bronze pads. The main inkwell body is in matching green figured marble which is raised onto ornate lion’s paw feet. The body is beautifully hand turned and separated with ormolu mounts and a lift off cover. Inside the git interior is inset with an original glass liner for ink. This very pleasing piece is in excellent original condition with very little sign of wear to the original gilding.
