Jaeger LeCoultre, Atmos Marina Poissons from 1962
About the Item
Jaeger LeCoultre - Atmos "Poissons
Switzerland
Brass, plexiglass
Year of manufacture 1962
Dimensions: H x W x D: 22.5 x 18 x 13.5 cm
Description:
The Atmos V Calibre 526 was produced in various special models. The white colour is called opal.
The model "Marina" offered here was released under the model name Plexi grave Poissons with the ref no 5810. The watch is also known under the names "Pisces" or "Aquarium".
The detailed photos clearly show how wonderfully three-dimensional the fish, air bubbles and water plants appear. This effect is created because the engravings have been deeply engraved into the thick outer plexiglass panes and then painted by hand.
White dial with Arabic numerals 3, 6, 9, 12 and eight indexes.
Serial number: 152483
Year of manufacture: 1962
Condition:
Absolutely accurate. Movement runs perfectly and reliably.
Case with slight signs of wear. The photos are not "embellished", the case condition is as shown in the photos.
Many comparable models have "frosty" discs, i.e. the plexiglass has become brittle due to UV radiation. Not so in this case, all the panes are preserved in super condition!
Interesting facts:
In 1927, the young engineer Jean-Léon Reutter presented the prototype of the Atmos watch he had developed.
The response in the press was great and so he signed a contract with the Compagnie générale de radiologie, which built and distributed the "Atmos I" under Reutter's direction from 1930.
Since there were always problems with the watches, the movements were manufactured by Le Coultre et Cie inSwitzerland from 1933 andin 1935 the production rights of the Atmos watch were transferred to Ets. Ed. Jaeger.
They concentrated on developing a simpler and more robust engine and from 1938 the era of the Atmos by Jaeger-LeCoultre began.
The "watch that lives on air" uses the "breathing movements" of a gas-filled bellows created by temperature fluctuations to wind the movement.
The movement of the watch is conspicuous by its cylindrical box on the back. Inside, a bellows-shaped expansion chamber contains chloroethyl, a gas that expands particularly strongly between 10 °C and 27 °C. The movement is then wound up.
A temperature difference of only one degree Celsius winds the watch for 48 hours. This interesting winding mechanism is complemented by an exquisite movement of the utmost precision with a heavy torsion pendulum.
The condition for the accuracy of the clock is a stable and vibration-free installation.
Also worth mentioning is the absolute environmental friendliness of the clock, which, despite its unlimited running time, does not need a battery or any other electrical drive.
For decades, the Atmos has been the official state gift of Switzerland to prominent visitors, e.g. politicians from abroad.

Jaeger LeCoultre Atmos clock
Switzerland
Brass gold plated
Year of manufacture 1967
Dimensions: H x W x D: 22 x 17 x 11 cm
Description:
Atmos VII in gold-plated brass case with black lacquered sides and matt gold brushed dial.
Instead of numbers, we see two double lines for 3, 6, 9 and 12 and single lines for the remaining hours. There is a raised logo below the 12, and the words "JAEGER LECOULTRE" and "ATMOS" above and below the hands. A stamped "Swiss Made" logo is located above the dragonfly.
Serial number: 252201, year of manufacture 1967.
This clock is based on the calibre 528/1 movement and was listed by Jaeger LeCoultre under ref. number 5900. The model was only built from 1967-1970 and is rare to find in the trade today due to its small number of pieces.
The original transport box, the so-called "tabernacle", makes this clock doubly interesting.
Instead of the usually used levelling screws, which are operated from inside the case, the Atmos VII has a wheel each on the left and right outside of the base for levelling.
Condition:
The movement runs absolutely reliable and accurate. The condition of the case is also very nice. The gilding is well preserved. There are minimal traces of cleaning on the dial, barely visible to the naked eye. There are also some rusted screws on the underside of the clock, which is not visible in use.
The photos are not "embellished", the case condition is as shown in the photos.
Points to know:
Although Leonardo da Vinci was already able to prove that the production of a perpetual motion machine is physically impossible, it has been tried again...

Interesting facts:
Generations of inventors have endeavoured to construct a perpetual motion machine - and one after the other was disappointed to discover that their designs did not work. Today we know that it is technically impossible to build a machine that works continuously without consuming energy. Apart from wear and tear, a machine only works as long as it is supplied with energy: Electricity, gas, petrol...
Without human intervention and practically without wear and tear, the Atmos does not run without energy consumption, but it is fed by an energy source that can be described as "eternal": It draws its energy from the constant fluctuations in air temperature. The Atmos literally lives from the air.
In order to utilise the temperature fluctuations as an energy source, a suitable medium had to be found. The choice fell on ethyl chloride (C2H5Cl) - a substance that dentists know as an anaesthetic. Ethyl chloride has a very high coefficient of thermal expansion between 10 and 27°C, i.e. the volume change is particularly large in this temperature range.
The round can...
