Antique Georgian Tall Case 8 Day Grandfather Clock Joseph Thompson of Whitehaven

About the Item

A fine antique Georgian Regency period tall case 8 day inlaid mahogany grandfather clock, by Joseph Thompson of Whitehaven, circa 1820. The clock is made of figured flame mahogany and inlaid with ebony and satinwood stringing, the clock hood with twin arched 'swan's neck' pediment with brass roundels and a central brass ball finial. The hood door is flanked by a pair of turned columns enclosing a painted dial, with a moon phase roller for night and day. The dial with black Roman numerals and having a seconds dial and also a calendar dial, the dial having gilded painted floral spandrels, the clock is signed to the center "Joseph Thompson, Whitehaven" (a prosperous Georgian coastal town & port in the Cumberland district of the north of England). The trunk of the case with ribbed pilasters and inlaid panels of satinwood stringing, the clock is raised on bracket feet. The clock has an eight day mechanism and strikes the hours on a mellow sounding bell, the clock chime can be silenced by not winding the chime arbor, original pendulum and weights. The clock has just been professionally cleaned and overhauled by a professional clocksmith and keeps good time, the case and clock are in very good condition. A Fine & important French bronze statue 8 day clock garniture in the Orientalist style, circa 1880. The 8 day clock with a time and strike mechanism, sounding the hours and half hours on a pleasant mellow sounding bell. The clock is house in a lavish bronze case heightened with silver gilt, to the top is an engraved 'Minaret' shaped finial and below a gallery of silvered and gilt bronze leaves. A fine antique French eight day mantle clock, gilded and fitted with Sevres porcelain plaques, circa 1830. An early French silk suspension clock, with an eight day time and strike movement, gently sounding the hours and half hour on a bell. The clock is housed in an extravagant gilded gesso Rococo style case and standing on an integral plinth. The clock with a silvered dial having a cuff of engine turned decoration around the center and black Roman numerals to the outside of the dial and the retailer's name "Carl Muller in Berlin" to the center. The base of the clock is fitted with a round hand-painted floral 'Sevres' porcelain plaque, the clock plinth is fitted with a rectangular 'Sevres' plaque, hand-painted with a pastoral scene with a young courting couple and grazing sheep & goats.
