Pair English Regency Cut Glass Candelabras, Attributed to John Blades

About the Item

Pair John Blades Cut Crystal & Gilt Bronze Shell and Acanthus Candlelabras Made by John Blades (English, 1783–1857) A rare and exceptional pair of John Blades cut crystal and gilt bronze candelabras, crafted during the English Regency period and attributed to the renowned glass workshops of John Blades (1783–1857). These stunning pieces reflect the elegance and craftsmanship of early 19th-century design. Standing an impressive 17 inches high, 12 inches wide, and 4.5 inches deep, each candelabra features intricately cut crystal adorned with all-over acanthus and palmette motifs. The design is further elevated by gilt bronze mounts, adding a touch of opulence. A central cut crystal shell finial crowns each piece, supported by a gilt bronze trellis with two graceful arms fitted with 3.5-inch diameter gilt bronze bobeches, complete with hanging 8-inch long crystals that catch and refract light beautifully. Raised on a conforming crystal column, resting on a sturdy 4.5-inch diameter base. Though unmarked, the quality and artistry clearly point to the workshop of John Blades. In remarkable antique condition, these candelabras show minor losses and flea bites consistent with their age but remain structurally sound. Ready to place and enjoy, they are a sophisticated addition to any mantel, dining table, or fine collection/interior. Overall Measurements: 17 inches high x 12 inches wide x 4.5 inches deep 3.5 inch diameter

Standing at an impressive 30 inches tall, these candelabra are a true testament to the opulence and craftsmanship of the era. Each candelabrum features a central figural sculpture of a bird holding a serpent, perched upon a tortoise. These decorative elements add a regal and classical aesthetic, reflecting the influence of the Neoclassical style during the Napoleon III period. In their recent use, the candelabra were adapted as lamps, and as a result, the bird finials are now removable. They were previously used as lamp finials...
