17th Century Venetian Lacquered and Gilded Collectible Box

About the Item

Rare and precious Venetian domed case made of richly lacquered and gilded wood, early 17th century, depicting "The Conquests of Venice." Caskets like this one are more unique than rare, not to be confused with the lacquered arte povera imitations that would spread in profusion in the 18th century. We are at the dawn of Venetian lacquer; after the "Persian" decoration of the 16th century, inspired by Arabic motifs, "depentors" began to turn their gaze toward the East and China: it was the traders and missionaries who traveled the Silk Road who extolled the quality of Chinese lacquerware and brought the first lacquerware objects to the Lagoon. This box set celebrates Venetian conquests: the character we see seated on the throne, with the typical tricorn on his head, is the doge, impersonating Venice, before whom a foreign ambassador bows. Many characters, some hooded and holding flashlights, animate the scene. The beauty and richness of the decoration leave one speechless. the wood is encrusted with sheets gilded in Mecca and painted in shades of red and green; the process of lacquering was long and complex, divided into several stages: the wood was carefully sanded and prepared with a very thin layer of special filler. Once the preparation was dried and polished, it was lacquered by overlaying several layers of lacquer (up to thirty, in the most valuable pieces) taking care to allow each layer to dry and smooth before applying the next. Careful and time-consuming operations that could take up to several years and had to be carried out under absolute shelter from any speck of dust, so much so, the story goes, that the most scrupulous lacquerers performed the last operations in the middle of a body of water. Excellent state of conservation. Measurements H cm 10 L cm 24 D cm 14
