About the Item

Iconic "Clam" ashtray design by Alan Fletcher 1931-2006 made by Mebel in Italy. Vintage Mebel Italy Black colour, Clam Ashtray Bowl by Alan Fletcher, Rare piece from 1969, Space Age. Please notice this advert id for ONE SIDE ONLY This clam-shaped ashtray looks like Dutch edam cheese with jagged teeth that serve to hold the halves together or grip the cigarette. Travelling on top of a number 27 bus down Westbourne Grove, Alan was suddenly struck with an idea for an ashtray. Not exactly something of riveting significance, but nevertheless an unsolicited mental image complete in all its detail. Including the shape, which resembled a dutch edam cheese. The identical halves were made from a single mould. They could be put together to form a base and lid, or used seperately thus providing two ashtrays. Synthesizing the graphic traditions of Europe and North America to develop a fiery, witty and highly personal visual style, Alan Fletcher is one of the most influential figures in British graphic design as the founder of Fletcher/ Forbes/Gill in the 1960s and Pentagram in the 1970s. The Clambox was designed by Alan Fletcher in 1969 for Mabel in Italy. Made from melamine, a mid-priced hard plastic (and therefore not used in mass-produced products), it is not only heat resistant but also durable. Self-extinguishing. Since it is durable, it is also suitable for storing important small items. Condition: Used original condition The item have some wear and use marks, please check the photos for cosmetic condition.
