Rare Large Early Native American Northwest Coast Salish Basket
About the Item
Rare large early Northwest Coast Salish hard burden basket dating from the mid to late 1800's. The basket is finely woven from split cedar bark and root that form a wave pattern that encircles the periphery. Note the old deer hide strap carrying straps, and the fancy herringbone weave design. These types of baskets were used Ethnographically for use as work baskets. The basket has developed a dark aged patina that only comes from great age and use. This stunning large museum quality basket displays very well and will make a fine addition to anyone's collection
The basket measures a very respectable 14 1/2" x 10 1/2" at the top and stands 11" tall.
