Danish Modern Paper Basket in Rattan & Cane by Wengler, Copenhagen, 1930s

About the Item

Beautiful handmade paper basket made in the 1930-40s by Wengler, Copenhagen. These baskets were all hand made in rattan, woven cane and wood, giving it a natural and lightweight appearance. Often seen in the period alongside Danish Modern furniture by Viggo Boesen, Finn Juhl, Poul Henningsen etc. Wickerwork goes way back in history and has been used on furniture in Denmark since the mid-1850s. As a cottage industry, where people used the cheap willow, shavings, straw or other available local material from nature for their own use, wickerwork goes back a long way in history. As an organised craft, there was no actual industrial production in Denmark until the first half of the 19th century. Robert Wengler (1825-1902) was known as the best wicker maker in Denmark and was appointed purveyor to Her Majesty. Many, now famous, architects came to his workshop to get knowhow and understanding about weaving and wicker work. Among those were Danish architects Arne Jacobsen, Viggo Boesen, Nanna & Jørgen Ditzel and Kay Bojesen. They had many of their prototypes made in Robert Wenglers workshop in Copenhagen.

Scandinavian Modern 1940s Rattan Lounge Chairs by Tove Kindt-Larsen at Wengler
By Tove & Edvard Kindt-Larsen, Robert Wengler
Located in Odense, DK
Set of early edition rattan lounge chairs designed by Tove Lindt-Larsen and made by Wengler, Copenhagen in the 1940s. Wonderful cushions with floral motifs. One chair retains original brass plaquette from Wengler, Copenhagen, Tove Kindt-Larsen (née Reddersen, 1906-1994) was one of the first female designers to emerge during Denmark’s ‘Golden Era’ in the mid-twentieth century. She is well-known for working with her husband, Edvard Kindt-Larsen (1901- 1982), but her own influence should not be underestimated. Her furniture was characterized by a fine sense of quality and a design language that responded to evolving tastes of the time. She was an early pioneer in rattan chairs and the use of molded plywood and well as moving away from designing room sets and instead conceiving individual pieces of furniture so that homeowners could curate their own spaces. An architect by training, with several years of furniture design under her belt, she embarked on a furniture design course at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, under the ‘godfather of Danish design’ Kaare Klint, where she met her husband. Edvard had already gained recognition for a grand-scale hotel project by the lakes of Copenhagen and, during their studies, the pair discovered their collaborative spirit and shared affinity for high-quality natural materials and complementary contrasts. They married in 1937 and established a joint design studio in 1945. Together, they broke the connection with Victorian furniture and designed everything from furniture to silverware, jewelry, rugs, textiles, wallpaper and even exhibitions and buildings, with a focus on functionalism throughout. Examples of their furniture include the Fireplace Chair (1939), the Pagoda Sofa...
