Chinese Celestial Cloud Column Base, c. 1750

About the Item

This 18th century architectural object, hand-carved out of a single block of white marble, is intricately finished with an all-over celestial cloud motif—an ancient and auspicious Buddhist pattern. It may have been designed to stand outside of a Qing dynasty temple. The top of the interior has a shallow dip, likely intended to support an architectural column. It is appreciated today as a sculptural planter indoors or out.
