About the Item

This wall fountain from The Vaucluse in Provence has been hand carved in Estaillade limestone. The elegantly carved stone fountain has a classical feel as there are a few iconic architectural features present. The crown features Cavetto molding, sometimes referred to as an “Egyptian cornice”, which was also popular in ancient Greek architecture. The unadorned frieze was also prevalent in ancient Greek and Roman structures. The raised architrave below the frieze has also been carved without any decoration. These three elements combined are known as the entablature and are of the Tuscan order. The back wall has an decorative iron backplate surrounding an S-scroll iron spout. This has been placed inside an indented, square section which is flanked by half carved columns that run up to the architrave. To the outside of the columns are scrolled corbel supports. There is a shallow basin frontage with round canted corners and a large rounded molding (all done by hand). French artisan finishing techniques have been given to mimic the appearance of age. Afterward, the stone was given a warm and subtle patina. This versatile stone wall fountain can be used inside or outside. The back wall has an intricate iron backplate surrounding an S-scroll spout.
