Very Large 18th Century Louis XV Period French Iron Chateau Fireplace Back

About the Item

Measuring nearly 34 inches square, this very large mid-18th century French Louis XV period iron fireplace back features a heraldic motif with the coats of arms of France and Navarre side by side in the centre with a crown above. A symbol of the union of the two nations, the coats of arms are flanked by greyhound supports holding up cornucopias representing prosperity. A Greek god of wind is depicted above the archways outlining the dogs and shield. Cast using the sand method of the period, this grand fireplace back from a French chateau is an authentic piece of history ready for its next century, circa 1750.
