French Wrough Iron Mechanical Rotisserie Spit, 19th Century
About the Item
Ornate and functional 19th-century French cast-iron rotisserie.
It consists of a winding jack resting on four claw feet, a handle, a winding key, 2 positions for the spit from the rotisserie, a cast-iron tripod spit with 7 spit hooks and a ring on top, and a single steel spit to which are added two double spikes to hold the meat.
This rotisserie was made by Cezeras in South-West of France (Beaumont de Lomagne) and it war orned of a lamb.
In very good working order, it has been overhauled by a clockmaker and makes 15 revolutions per hour. The purpose of these antique spit-turners is to turn spits of roasting meat in front of a fire without anyone having to do it by hand. Spits like this one turned a horizontal spit at hearth level, and when the bell rang, the cook knew it was time to wind the spring.
An ideal gift for chefs and old-fashioned barbecue enthusiasts.
