Set of Three Chinese Quadrilobe Lattice Courtyard Panels, c. 1850

About the Item

The sweeping elegance of these 19th-century courtyard doors, with their intricate lattice panels, hides the mathematical brilliance required to create them. The wax-finished, knotty panels evoke life in a traditional courtyard home, where the openwork allowed light and air to flow into the inner rooms while maintaining privacy for its occupants. Creating lattice was a geometric puzzle; this elaborate quadrilobe pattern was made by the precise interlocking of long and short pieces of carved wood. The panels are finished with finely carved and pierced top panels of archaistic dragons forming geometric scrollwork around a central flaming pearl. Dimensions listed describe an individual panel. Panels can be connected with hinges to form a free-standing folding screen. Additional Dimensions: All Panels: 69"W x 2"D x 116"H

Set of Four Chinese Courtyard Door Panels, c. 1850

The doors were originally linked by hinges set in opposite directions, allowing the doors to fold upon themselves as they open. Instead of the elaborate carvings often found on Qing-dynasty doors...
