Oceanic Carved Hardwood Lime Spatula, Papua New Guinea

About the Item

A Papua New Guinea hand carved ebony lime spatula covered with continuous swirl designs etched on the open handle and shaft, with some traces of lime still present. Mounted on a custom steel base, this tribal artifact from the Massim people is also a stunning piece of modern sculpture. Rich patina from age and use. Early to mid 20th century. The peoples New Guinea use betel nut—areca palm fruit, which is chewed with lime made from burnt shells or coral and other substances as a mild stimulant. The ornate containers and spatulas used respectively to hold and serve lime are true works of art. Nice scale at 26 inches high

19th century Burmese bronze temple bell with original carved hardwood stand, painted iron hanging bracket, and striker. This rare large scale cast bronze bell has a splendid sculptural and spiritual presence. The bell has a long inscription on the upper part. The offering of a bronze bell to a monastery or temple was considered second only to the offering of a Buddha image as an act of merit (kutho). Such bells were cast using the lost wax (cire perdue) method. This is a traditional mask of a figure with male facial features and two holes as eyes and another for the mouth with a handle below the face. The island of Timor gave rise to a distinctive practice of creating traditional masks whose precise origins and significance remain uncertain. Portraying both male and female ancestors, they were held by men during dances and other ceremonies, including celebrations of victory in war. Carved sculptures and masks are specific to rural villages.
