Japanese small antique stone Buddha/Jizo Bodhisattva/1600-1800/Edo period

About the Item

We have a rare stone Buddha in stock. It is a small stone Buddha made in the early to middle Edo period (1600-1800). It has the appearance of Jizo Bodhisattva. This stone Buddha was originally made to pray for the safety of travelers, such as at the entrance of a village or in the middle of a fork in a mountain pass. It was probably not carved by a sculptor specializing in stone Buddha statues, but by a villager, a traveling monk, or a carpenter who could carve. I think that is why it has a very gentle, simple, and warm design. In Japan, there is a belief that gods and buddhas coexist. In the case of this stone Buddha, there is a possibility that it is a god in the form of Jizo Bodhisattva. Therefore, in Japan, such stone Buddhas are sometimes called travel gods or dosojin. A similar one was published in the Japanese Stone Buddha Encyclopedia, so I will post a picture here. Small and very cute. Moreover, it is well preserved. It can stand on its own, but it is more stable if you lean it against a wall. How about decorating your front door or placing it in your garden? It is a recommended dish. Weight: 2.25kg Stone: Granite. [We mainly sell old Japanese items. We've seen tens of thousands of items so far. Taking advantage of that experience, we are posting attractive items here.
