About the Item

Very old Japanese Huge wood carved penis. This wood carving is from the late Edo period (1800s-1860s). It was carved from a single cedar tree. It is rare to find such a huge wood carving. In the mid-Edo period, in some areas of the Tohoku region, there was a culture of hanging a wooden carving of a phallic penis in the attic of a house as a guardian deity of the house with the meaning of prosperity of descendants and protection against fire. Japan has a hearth culture, and hearths are exposed to smoke for many years and become blackened with soot like this. This product has been left with the soot and dust intact so as not to spoil the atmosphere that has accumulated over the years. Soot may stick to your hand or fall off if you rub it with your hand. Please understand this in advance. This item evokes the spirit of wabi-sabi, the Japanese philosophy of finding beauty in imperfection and impermanence. It is a modest and humble beauty, the beauty of the unconventional, the opposite of vulgarity. This is a unique and very rare item. Weight 8 kg.
