Japanese Antique small Stone Buddha/Jizo Bodhisattva/ Edo /1750-1868/ Wabi sabi

About the Item

If you want something special, we recommend purchasing items selected by Brood. We sell carefully selected old Japanese items. I've seen tens of thousands of items so far. Based on that experience, only selected items are posted here. We are able to do this because of our long experience. There may be items on the 1stdibs site that look and feel the same, but the items selected by Brood are unique. This is a stone Buddha made on Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture. (Sado Island is marked with a red circle on the map.) Sado Island is a special island with its own history and culture, which is a rare species in Japan and a candidate for world heritage. Many stone Buddhas have been built here since the Edo period. People used to dedicate this stone Buddha to the temple to pray for the recovery of sick children. This is a Buddhist statue in the shape of a monk called Jizo Bosatsu. Jizo is one of the bodhisattvas in the world of Buddhism. It is a being who saves people in the world with an infinite merciful heart. Jizo has no hair on his head and wears a kesa (long robe). The stone material is sandstone, which has been weathered by the wind and rain of Sado Island. This is a feature of the stone Buddhas of Sado Island. I will attach a photo of the stone Buddha on Sado Island to the photo. And this was owned by a Japanese collector. It is a stone Buddha with a gentle face and a gentle impression. It is a very rare item. As a point of caution, although it stands on its own, there is a little wobble. By sandwiching a small rubber plate, etc., it becomes more stable and stands on its own. This is difficult to obtain even in Japan. Highly recommended! There are few stores that sell such things in 1stdibs. We sell with confidence. Also, I want many people to know the goodness of antiques, so I set the price reasonably.
