About the Item

This item is a cute "small twin-body Dosojin" made in the mid-Edo period (around the 18th century). Its small size and easy portability mean it can be easily placed anywhere, and it is also very attractive as an interior decoration. This stone Buddha is carved with Jizo Bodhisattva clasping hands together in a friendly manner, and you can feel warmth and comfort from their expressions. Dosojin has long been worshiped in Japan as a god who protects the safety of travelers, and by placing it at the entrance to a village, people pray for the safety of travelers and residents. This small stone Buddha was also made to fulfill the role of such a Dosojin. (In Japan, there is a concept of Shinbutsu Shugo, where Buddha and God are sometimes fused together.) There is a reference image of a similar Dosojin in a specialist book, so please take a look at that as well. It seems that it was originally painted, but the color has fallen off over time, and only a faint red color remains around the belly. The texture of the stone over time gives this Dosojin a historical weight and unique style.
