Japanese Antique Huge Horse "Shinme" 1800s-1860s / Sculpture Wabi Sabi
About the Item
This account is operated by five different companies.
As for me, I specialize in Japanese antiques and carefully selected items.
With my 20 years of experience, I am re-proposing Japanese antiques from a new perspective.
This is a very old huge carved wooden horse made in Japan.
This wood carving was made in the Edo period (1800's to 1860's).
It is carved from cedar wood.
The horse is called “Shinme (神馬)".
Shinme is a horse that was considered sacred as a horse ridden by a deity.
The term refers to horses that are consecrated to Japanese shrines or appear during rituals.
More than 200 years after its creation, this wood carving wears a divine and decadent air.
I have seen relatively small wood carved horses, but in my 20 years as a buyer, I have never encountered such a huge wood carved horse.
It is recommended as a particularly rare item.
Some of the joints at the base of the legs are loose and there is some wobble.
However, it stands firmly on its own.
It weighs about 30 kg.
Since ancient times, people have created and passed down necessary tools from familiar materials to survive in the severe struggle against nature, and have nurtured a lifestyle and culture.
By using these objects over a long period of time, they accumulate a sense of flavor and reflect a way of life.
In today's world, where cheap and disposable items are encouraged, the act of repeatedly re-creating things around us by modifying them opens up a new world.
With this philosophy in mind, we collect beautiful, powerful, and unique carefully selected antiquities from Japan.
